# Justy's Creative Portfolio

Justin James Clayden — "Justy" — is a Creative Technologist who has spent more than thirty years making things that move, talk and glow. This is his portfolio: interactive installations, animation, web experiments, hardware builds and voiceover work.
The home page is an interactive 3D laboratory. Six lasers, one per "element" — atoms, bits, brain waves, electrons, photons and pressure waves — fire into a synthesis chamber and assemble a project from the raw materials it was built out of. The laboratory needs WebGL and JavaScript, so the full index of projects is reproduced below in plain HTML for readers and agents that do not run it.

## Implementing Fluid-Solid Coupling in Kinetic Two-Phase Flow Simulation
I recently was enchanted by a relatively new algorithm outlined in the paper ["Implementing Fluid-Solid Coupling in Kinetic Two-Phase Flow Simulation"](https://www.geometry.caltech.edu/pubs/LD23.pdf) by Wei Li and Mathieu Desbrun (Via [2 Minute Papers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF_tfIieeE0)).
It handles the usually quite difficult cases involving the boundaries between two immiscible fluids, allowing for highly complex interactions between them, including:

In the past I would read a paper like this, injest its meaning, and spend days if not weeks creating an implementation from scratch. Instead, I decided I would use Claude Code to assist me with the task. We produced initially a 2D implementation, then a 3D implementation. I liked the 2D version a lot, and so extended it to support arbitrary shapes via bitmaps, as well as colouring the shapes using RGB bitmaps. I also implemented an orchestration system that allows objects and forces to be introduced at arbitrary times during the simulation.

## Australian Cancer Plan Website

Justy led the information design and project management for Cancer Australia's [Australian Cancer Plan](https://www.australiancancerplan.gov.au/) website, delivered through Paper Moose.
The Australian Cancer Plan is the national strategy for cancer control in Australia. It's a substantial site -- six strategic objectives covering everything from prevention and early detection through to workforce development and health equity, with dedicated sections for ten focus populations and seven stages of the care pathway. Structuring stakeholder consultation summaries, implementation frameworks, and monitoring strategies into something navigable required careful information architecture and close collaboration with government stakeholders. Justy also handled a significant proportion of the web implementation, built in React with Sanity as the CMS.
Justy built the full implementation of the recently released [Implementation Plan](https://www.australiancancerplan.gov.au/implementation-plan) -- a filterable database of initiatives across the ten-year agenda, with search, pagination, and breakdowns by timeframe, stakeholder, and population group. This kind of work sits right at the intersection of information design, front-end development, and content strategy.

### City of Parramatta FOGO Jingle
In late 2023 the City of Parramatta commissioned Paper Moose to write them a jingle for the [2024 rollout of FOGO](https://papermoose.com/our-work/case-study/feed-it-to-fogo).
Pete Saladino provided an initial set of lyrics, which Justy then refined with him to create the final version. Justy wrote and performed the music for this jingle, including character voices (and the burp -- hey, he's a professional).
The client was delighted, and below you'll also find some instructional videos designed to help people identify the best places to dispose of their food scraps and garden waste.
This project highlights Justy's versatility -- from songwriting and musical performance to voice acting, all delivered within a commercial production pipeline at Paper Moose.

## LASER Scanner
A novel method for visualising a space

Justy converted a home-made Meccano 2-axis webcam mount into a laser mount. The system is built around an Arduino board that sends timed signals to two servo motors, mounted at right angles to each other. This gives a crude x&y pointer, which can be used to 'draw' patterns on any surface. The desk is illuminated by many vertical sweeps of a 1mW red laser, captured with a Leica C-LUX1 in 60-second extended exposure mode. The project demonstrates Justy's comfort working across embedded programming, physical prototyping, and creative visualisation.

This one is a visualisation of 'Brownian motion'. Brownian motion is analogous to a 'random walk'. The walk is not truly random because the same pattern will be generated every time the system is reset.

This image is a visualisation of the morphology of the 2-axis mount for the laser. It's clear from this image that the unit is more stable when making vertical sweeps than when it makes horizontal sweeps. The increment used for moving the laser also affects the quality of the scan.

Here the laser points along 8 different directions. The unsteadiness mentioned in the previous image is seen along any direction that has a horizontal component. The increment used in this picture is small, so overall the quality of the line is smoother.

The desk is illuminated by an expanding 8-sided spiral. The laser gives a clue as to the type of material it hits -- for example the translucent plastic of a computer versus the opaque wood of the desk.

In a later iteration, Justy added a microcontroller switch to the laser, enabling it to 'pick up the pen' as it were. Super-sneaky sneak preview: here's a random dot pattern, playing across one of his clay sculptures:

## Thermomo-jacket

The 'Thermomo-jacket' is a wearable thermometer that represents the temperature inside the jacket as different hues of colour. It demonstrates Justy's ability to combine embedded electronics, microcontroller programming, and physical prototyping into a single functioning garment. At around 10 degrees Celsius the LED lights blue. Justy took a quick walk in the winter air before taking this photo to get the reading down. Brrrr!

Things are heating up -- this is around 18 degrees. Temperature is mapped to hue. The saturation and brightness of the colour was kept at 100%.

In the mid 20's the LED glows yellow then orange. This is a really warm jacket, so a fast temperature rise is inevitable.

In the high 20's the LED glows red, or even a little violet. Hot stuff... coming through!

The LED is very bright, and the three colours are produced by three separate LEDs, so a diffusing material is needed to cover it. Otherwise, a colour split occurs. In the picture above, the colour should be orange, but separate green and red colours are visible. For the series of pictures above that, a small piece of masking tape was used. Obviously that won't do for high fashion!

Here's the LED itself -- its pins have pushed through the jacket, and are wired up on the other side. It's an RGB LED, which means the individual red, green, and blue lights can be controlled independently.
The LED and the thermistor (a resistor that changes its resistance with temperature) are connected to the microcontroller board:

A: In the foreground is a power regulator, which provides stable power to the microcontroller. B: This is the microcontroller. C: The brown pillowy thing in the background is the ceramic oscillator -- the component that provides a 16MHz timing signal to the microcontroller.
Here is how the thermistor was wired up:

The Arduino board has several analogue inputs that require a varying voltage. This voltage needs to change as a function of the resistance of the thermistor. The classic approach is a voltage divider:

As the resistance of the thermistor changes, so does the voltage 'XV'. This value is read by the Arduino board, and then in software the reading is mapped to colour. The thermistor is hidden near the LED, next to the wool of the jacket, and so it tends to get very warm very quickly.
Here's another detail of the wiring to the thermistor:

The blue wire gives the variable voltage level. Notice how everything is heat-shrunk. This ensures no short circuits can occur as the thermistor moves around inside the jacket.
Future plans include adding a second thermistor on the outside of the jacket, enabling measurement of the difference between inside and outside temperatures and representing that delta via the LED.
